Kim Fancher Lordier combines keen observation, and sensitivity in developing
her award winning landscapes and pet portraits. Native to the California Bay
Area, a 1989 graduate of the Academy of Art College, San Francisco, and
University of San Francisco, Kim has been involved in the arts and animals all
her life.
After college, Kim flew for a major air carrier, experiencing many domestic and
foreign locals, all the while keeping up with painting, pastels and animal
portraiture. After the events of Sept. 2001 she turned to painting full time.
Inspired by the early California Impressionists, Kim is fascinated with the
unique atmospheric qualities of the California light. She strives to portray the
beauty, depth and energy of the land and sea.
"My landscape paintings are done "en plein air," which means "in the open air."
My goal is to simplify the masses (such as trees, mountains, water, etc.) and
arrange them in a dynamic composition using light, shadow and color. I want to
accomplish this in the least amount of time due to the ever changing light of
day, in order to get the feeling of the moment on canvas. Painting on location
has given my work a freshness that I have not found working from photos."
For the last two decades Kim has warmed the hearts of dog and horse owners
painting the likeness of their pets with pastels. Kim works primarily in
pastels, finding them the perfect balance between drawing and painting. Pastels
are often thought of as being soft and pale, but when the full spectrum is used
the result can be rich and vibrant. The successful combination of art and
animals has been rewarding for this dedicated artist.
Kim’s landscapes and animal portraits have won numerous awards, most recently
the magazine The Pastel Journal awarded her painting "Sunset on
the Pacific Coast" a third place award in the highly coveted PASTELS 100, 2004
competition. She has painted commissioned portraits for clients and corporations
around the country, and currently holds memberships in the California Art
Club, Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Society of Western
Artists.
